One of my early Paris street painting not far from my apt. on rue Pierre Larousse. The monsieur on the second floor

above the café was thrilled that I was painting chez lui. He assured me every day that he would buy it when finished. When finished, I was invited to the café to meet sa femme and present my chef-d'oeuvre. She was blond,dressed in a white embroidered tunic top with slightly transparent white pajama pants. Comfortable in her cushioned seat, she leaned back holding her chilled Chabis high and announced that "Vôtre couleurs n'entre pas dans nôtre universe." She had to repeat it a number of times before I realized that she was into white because it represented purity. Time for me to go to confession and the bank.

 The Basserie Wepler is still a grand place to sit and look out on to La Place Clichy.

In 1974, I lived nearby on rue Amsterdam, a hop, skip, and a jump, to this famous cafe. I was taken for déjeuner with oysters there ONCE. Those were quiet days with me and my water colors, and mornings at Le Petit Poucet, next door.

This was a little cous-cous restaurant next to my apt. on rue Pierre Larousse.  It was formerly called Les Palmiers until I made the painting. I loved Max even if he didn't buy the painting.

 I remember sitting here in 1973.  The waiter was surly. He served a dog a bowl of water before serving me my café. I looked up at the late afternoon Paris sky. 
"This is where I want to live." I thought.

I painted this for my lawyer, France Guinet. It was a gift for her husband. He used to hang out there when he was a student.  The place is still there. I went by the other day.  It was actually empty when I painted it. The people are invented.

It was a great bookstore. The patronne is the blonde climbing the ladder. I painted it during the very short season when little girls sell daffodils in the street.. The little girl was ravi.
