This was a little cous-cous restaurant next to my apt. on rue Pierre Larousse.  It was formerly called Les Palmiers until I made the painting. I loved Max even if he didn't buy the painting.

 I remember sitting here in 1973.  The waiter was surly. He served a dog a bowl of water before serving me my café. I looked up at the late afternoon Paris sky. 
"This is where I want to live." I thought.

I painted this for my lawyer, France Guinet. It was a gift for her husband. He used to hang out there when he was a student.  The place is still there. I went by the other day.  It was actually empty when I painted it. The people are invented.

It was a great bookstore. The patronne is the blonde climbing the ladder. I painted it during the very short season when little girls sell daffodils in the street.. The little girl was ravi.
